Support Groups

Group facilitation (including therapy and support groups) allows people to come together and learn about themselves in relationship to each other, their community and the world.

Group experiences provide learning spaces that can increase our awareness of:

  • Our relationship to the larger community and world issues
  • How we experience and resolve conflict
  • How we can get support
  • How we can see others as ourselves

BLC clinicians facilitate a variety of groups including:

  • Parent support groups
  • Sibling support groups

SibShops

BLC also has trained facilitators who can run Sibshop groups. Sibshops provide young brothers and sisters peer support and information in a lively, recreational setting. They are run by a trained facilitator and are evidence of their loving concern for the family member who will have the longest-lasting relationship with a person who has a disability.

  • Meet other sibs (usually for the first time)
  • Talk about the good and not-so-good parts of having a sib with special needs with others who “get it”
  • Play interactive games that target building, empathy, compassion, tolerance and love
  • Learn how other siblings handle sticky situations sometimes faced by brothers and sisters
  • Laugh
  • Learn about the services that their sibling with special needs receive and learn how to become a sibling and/or social facilitator
  • Have fun!

Theoretical Influences that Guide My Work:

We do not have a “one approach fits all” philosophy of therapy. BLC uses an integrative therapeutic approach based on models listed above, that have been proven to work (evidence-based). Our approach has a positive theoretical orientation that believes people are competent and resourceful. The focus, therefore, is not on a continuous discussion of problems but on finding solutions for them. We use a systemic lens, which means that we consider how the complex interactions of relationships influence current psychological and emotional health. It’s our belief that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from one another. As a systems therapist, our team always consider client(s) many environments and relationships, including family, friends, work, school and community.
